Question of the week: Should Christians watch movies?

It depends on the movie. Christians are called to guard our hearts, and to focus on what is pure, noble, excellent and praiseworthy.
I don’t understand the mind-set that says “no” to movies simply because they’re movies. That smacks of ascetic legalism. Some of our fondest memories were made when our whole family enjoyed a wholesome movie together.
Discernment is key. Hard and fast rules like “I’ll never go see an R-rated movie” may be unduly restrictive. I don’t go to many movies that are rated R, but I wasn’t going to let the rating stop me from what I felt was my Christian responsibility to see “The Passion of the Christ” when it was released.
I think that is what “freedom in Christ” means. He gives us the freedom to make intelligent, moral choices and to act on those as we are led by His Holy Spirit.
