Special Report: Teen Beat

By kirk noonan | February 15, 2008

Changing of the guard?
According to a report by ABCnews.com abortion and gay marriage are not at the top of young evangelicals’ lists of things they want a presidential candidate to address. Instead, the report says, young evangelicals want them to address “Internet pornography, media glamorization of sex and violence, and children orphaned by AIDS.”

Choked up

Preteens and teens choke themselves with dog leashes to get a temporary feeling of floating when the blood rushes back to their brain? According to the CDC more than 80 youths have died.

Government intervention…in the bedroom?

In New York City the health department handed out free condoms on Valentine’s Day.

“The NYC Condom has shown us what a sexy brand can do for safer sex,” said Dr. Monica Sweeney, the Health Department’s Assistant Commissioner for HIV Prevention and Control. “We gave out more than 36 million of them last year. I hope the fresh look will help even more New Yorkers protect themselves from infection and unintended pregnancy in 2008.”

The press release with the aforementioned quote brings up a host of questions such as: Should the government be this involved in people’s lives? Does such a campaign dismiss personal responsibility? Does the city’s campaign encourage people to have sex before they’re married?

Some Christians may disagree with me, but I don’t think handing out condoms is something we should be worried about. Instead, let’s focus on the heart of the problem…specifically parents who fail to equip their children for the sexual jungle that they will encounter once they leave Mommy & Daddy’s house. For you Dads with son’s approaching manhood, I recomend a book called “Preparing Your Son for Every Man’s Battle”. There is also a version for girls. These books help parents teach God’s plan for sexual purity in the real world.
